WHY MBA? 8 REASONS THAT GO BEYOND THE OBVIOUS
10:25 AM
Like many people who consider going to business school, you may want an
MBA to advance your career. To change roles or work in an entirely new field.
To build leadership skills and gain expertise in new areas. To land your dream
job or launch your own venture.
All excellent reasons to gen an MBA.
But at Berkeley Haas School of Business, I believe there is a lot more
to business school than your first post-MBA job title – which brings us to, 8
reasons to get an MBA that go beyond the obvious:
1.
Reinvent yourself – This is the place to spend some
time figuring out what you are good at – and to surprise yourself by
discovering that you don’t even know yet what some of those things might be. In
business school, you will find opportunities to get some feedback (even to
solicit it) – aggressively. To be inquisitive and learn from what others do and
how they got there.
2.
Chew on some really
big issues – When was the
last time you spent 120 minutes discussing globalization or technological innovation?
Opportunities to become a subject matter expert in new (and important) areas
occur in business school daily. Make that hourly.
3.
Make friends with a
few CEOs – The intensity
of business school forges lifelong friendships – with people who are clearly
going places. Of course, this means nothing unless you actually like these
future CEOs, so as part of your business school evaluation process, it is
important to make sure that you do.
4.
Get unabashed access
to business leaders – You would be
surprised how often top executives take time out to share their wisdom with MBA
students. (This could be you one day, and we hope you will do the same). When
business leaders come to campus, it presents a great opportunity to learn how
leading executives handle leadership challenges. This is business school as the
backstage pass.
5.
Gain inside
perspective on global cultures – When will you have another five-week winter vacation? That business
school semester break represents travel to the home countries of your
classmates and the opportunity to gain insights, both business and cultural,
and even to catch a little R&R. Believe us, you will have earned it!
6.
Fail without getting
fired
– While business school
prepares you for the real world, it isn’t the real world – you won’t lose your
job if you take a risk, even make a mistake. This makes it the optimal time to
take on new leadership roles, try classes that seem challenging, and to step
outside your comfort zone.
7.
Tackle business
problems for big organization, and be taken seriously – Business School will give you a
chance to consult for world-renowned firms on real-life business problems. How
do we expand into an emerging market? Which competitor should we acquire? How
should we price our new product? Yup, you will help firms answer these
questions – and feel (almost) ready to do so.
8.
Feel awesome, almost
all the time – Seriously.
Most MBAs will tell you that business school was the best two years of their
life. That is a pretty bold statement, but speaks to the potential of this
experience you are considering. So, reflect on what is most important to you in
program, and go for it.
There you have it – 8 reasons to go to business school that go beyond
the obvious. Want a look at just how awesome it can be? Take a look at the
Berkeley Haas Class of 2014 MBA experience in 3 minutes – this could be you!
